Multifactor authentication (MFA) is widely regarded as a cornerstone of modern cybersecurity. It promises to add layers of security by requiring multiple forms of verification before granting access to sensitive systems and data. However, the reality of MFA implementation falls short of this promise. Unfortunately what is being marketed as MFA is, in fact, nothing more than glorified single-factor authentication (SFA) disguised under a different name. This chapter will dissect the illusion of MFA compliance, examining how and why the cybersecurity industry has misrepresented true MFA and the consequences of this widespread deception.
