We’ve all heard the horror stories from major companies of data breaches, ransomware, or other incidents involving data being compromised. These things often happen because of human error somewhere along the way, but hackers and scammers are getting more and more sophisticated every day. Truthfully, most humans aren’t that good at being careful, and it’s more difficult than it should be to accomplish everything we need to do to keep data and our information secure and private. It’s crucial that we—everyone who uses computers—do this. But it’s especially important for data scientists and anyone who works with data to pay attention to security and privacy. Privacy is especially important for data scientists because they work with data that can be sensitive, and not all organizations have good practices around privacy, so it can fall to the data scientists to be personally responsible.
