After an introduction rather heavy on academic references and concepts, in this chapter, I want to take you, dear reader, on a journey through the diverse realms that open source has to offer. Through interviews with several individuals who are integral to my personal history and the very inspiration behind this book, this chapter unfolds like a well-structured design methodology—distilling and then expanding upon defined concepts. It amplifies voices, concepts, and, most importantly, interpretations from those who are the hands-on practitioners of what we strive so earnestly to understand and define: open source. These contributors, engaging from various fields and perspectives, enrich our understanding of open source as culture.
