Reading Habits of Students of a School in South Kolkata in the Information Era
摘要
Promotion of reading habit among the adolescent is a very challenging job and the school librarians feel it is their duty to inculcate independent reading habits among the children falling under their jurisdiction. Students of a Higher Secondary (10 + 2 years, pre-primary—class XII) West Bengal Board English medium school having more than 3000 students in the city of Kolkata have been approached and surveyed through a questionnaire. It is seen that apart from recreational reasons a high percentage of students read for academic purpose or project work. It is also seen that most of them read books from the school library or from collections of their own books. The students read story books on both online and offline platforms. On a regular basis, most students devote 2 to 6 h per day to reading. Time taken by maximum students to read story books, varies between less than 1 to 3 h per day. Students using the online platform spend less than 2 h each day, for online reading. It is seen most of them spend less than 2 h every day on Google. It is concluded that efforts must be taken to promote online and offline reading and steps should be taken both in offline and online mode to inculcate their reading habit.
