Since the first descriptions of postsynthetic modification (PSM) in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) over two decades ago, the field has seen significant growth and change. Thanks to the heightened understanding surrounding MOF chemical dynamics, stability, and reactivity, what used to be the realm of simple organic reactions has evolved to include highly specialized reaction types on a wide variety of MOF substrates. Just as MOF chemistry has advanced since the early 2000s, other fields of chemistry have as well, which intersect with MOF PSM in new and interesting ways. PSM reactions now include redox chemistry, precisely tuned syntheses of core-shell systems, and more. This evolution and growth continues, with many groundbreaking and interesting examples of PSM published in the last 5 years. This chapter focuses on recent reactions performed on the constituent organic MOF linkers specifically: ligand PSM (including postsynthetic polymerization, PSP), and postsynthetic exchange (PSE).
