This paper aims to analyse false friends in Farsi (henceforth Persian) and Tajik to help Tajik-speaking learners comprehend texts and conversations in Persian. Words such as pāru (Persian: row, Tajik: fertiliser), čoruk (Persian: crease, Tajik: slim), nāhār (Persian: lunch, Tajik: hungry) and kowli (Persian: gypsy, Tajik: related to the lake) are some examples of faux amis. The paper uses corpus-based research (Uppsala Persian CorpusPersianUppsala Corpus for Persian and Tajik National Corpus for TajikTajiknational Corpus). A list of nearly 30 false friends was gathered within the contexts of both varietiesVariety, and some tasks were provided to help learners overcome nuances of the terms. It is shown that the use of naturally occurring texts, along with practical pragmatic knowledge, can help learners understand semantic nuances of similar pairs of words in Persian and Tajik. Moreover, some strategies (contexts) and tools (glossaries) are suggested to help learners use the words properly and avoid misunderstanding and erroneous usage of words.
