This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of the EU transition towards a circular economy and the European Commission’s role. It examines key policies of the first von der Leyen Commission from 1 December 2019 to 30 November 2024, contrasting them with those of the previous Juncker Commission which was in office from 1 November 2014 to 30 November 2019. The analysis reveals a progressive evolution in EU policy over the 8-year span since the adoption of the Paris Agreement, emphasizing the positive outcomes of the Circular Economy Action Plan thus far. While acknowledging these achievements, the chapter underlines the imperative role of future developments in consolidating a European circular economy. Ongoing efforts to pursue policy objectives are deemed essential for realizing the Green Deal objectives.
