The mass media can reinforce and legitimize racism and promote xenophobic perceptions in society. Examining news reports and editorials in three Bangladeshi newspapers—Prothom Alo (PA, Bangla), Daily Star (DS, English), and Bangladesh Pratidin (BP, Bangla)—in the wake of the Rohingya influx in 2017, and since then, this study shows that major Bangladeshi newspapers tend to paint a negative picture of the Rohingyas in their coverage. In doing so, they seem to overlook the decades of atrocities and discrimination and oppression of the Rohingyas by the Myanmar government. The newspapers’ stance on the Rohingya crisis seems to reflect the voice of the Myanmar and Indian government, which seems to implicitly condone the ethnic cleansing of the Rohingyas by the Myanmar authorities. These newspapers appear to portray the Rohingyas as “militant” and “terrorist,” thus legitimizing the genocide committed by the Myanmar authorities against the Rohingyas. The newspapers reported that the Rohingyas initiated “terrorist” attacks in Myanmar that led to their forced displacement. Such media coverage ignores the UN’s observation of the decades-long atrocities committed by the Myanmar authorities against the vulnerable group.

摘要
