The chapter examines the representation of the practice of “Thalaikoothal” in two recent Tamil films. Thalaikoothal which literally translates as “head bath” is the practice of geronticide prevalent in certain districts in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. The practice is initiated and carried out by the family members. Tamil films – Baaram (2018) and K.D (2019) deal with Thalaikoothal as their central premise. While Baaram takes a docudrama approach, K.D fits the mainstream commercial film aesthetic. Baaram received the national award for best feature film in Tamil and K.D also won awards in several venues. The films delve into the seldom represented issues of aging, elderly care, and death. The chapter, through a critical reading of these visual texts, engages with the discourses of aging and death. It will explore the socioeconomic and cultural constructions of the practice as presented in the films. The films provide valuable insights on the role of family and state in elderly care.
