Population ageing is almost a universal phenomenon in the contemporary world with multifarious implications for societies as in India that is undergoing rapid transition in the wake of globalisation and associated processes. Against such a backdrop, providing safe and secure ageing to the aged of the country becomes a real challenging task. Therefore, the Indian society today is much concerned with the emerging problem of elder abuse as a manifestation of its ongoing social changes. Since the perpetrators of elder abuse have been mostly from within the family, this problem till now has either been overlooked or denied. Moreover, population ageing being of recent concern, this issue was neither addressed upon, nor there was any mechanism for its redressal and mitigation. Taking into account the dimension of feminisation of ageing along with the patriarchal social set-up of this country, the problem of elder abuse is assumed to have a gender aspect that has largely remained obscured from academic inquest due to the ge neral societal tendency to homogenise the elderly population. This study thus attempts to highlight the interconnection between elder abuse and the gender aspect to discuss certain concerted actions already taken or could be taken at different societal levels in this direction with a purpose to alleviate the problem.
