Crime and Abuse Against Elderly Women in India: Laws, Policies, and Need for Intervention

With improvements in the health system, people are surviving for longer years and is resulting in an aging population. Among elderly, women are surviving for longer years than men and it is leading to “Feminization of Aging.” Women face more problems, crime, and abuse mainly due to economic dependence and patriarchal nature of society. This chapter is based on secondary data and is divided into two parts: the first part is to understand the form of crime and abuse against the elderly women, and the second part is to study laws and policies of government for elderly women and recommend steps for their welfare. Findings indicate that there is maltreatment and abuse of elderly women and there is a need for covidalization and to amend laws and formulate new policies to help the elderly women who are victimized mostly by known persons.
