Introduction: Elder Abuse and Crime

Elder abuse is a widespread problem in India and across the globe, which often goes unreported in most cases because of various reasons. This part brings out numerous angles of elder abuse and crime occurring in India. It draws on both primary and secondary research by offering a holistic understanding of this pressing issue through various approaches. This part promises a deep dive into the various crucial issues facing the elderly today, like poverty, financial fraud, loss of property, malnutrition, loneliness, social isolation, dependence on children due to long-term ailments, poor healthcare, physical, social, and verbal abuse, unique challenges faced by aging women, etc. Spanning through five themes of inattention and neglect of the elderly, the gendered nature of aging, literary representation of issues of the elderly, problems in elderly healthcare, and policy and legal frameworks about elders in India, this part explores myriad contexts prevalent across different Indian states and proposes comprehensive strategies for prevention and intervention.
