All societies will age, resulting in an increase in the dependency ratio reducing the capacity of the society to respond to the increased demands of an aging society. Issues related to aging are not dealt with extensively in the Indian Constitution and are relegated to Directive Principles. The National Health Policy 2017, The National Policy for Older Persons 1999, National Population Policy 2000 do have some provisions that acknowledge issues related to health of senior citizens. Central and state governments have commenced a few programs to support health and welfare needs of the aged persons. While not commensurate with the size of the problem, especially as it will evolve in future, government response is a good beginning, which has the potential to be the foundation for a more robust response in future.
