This chapter builds upon previous discussions of the Tibeto-Burman, Tai-Kadai, Miao-Yao,Ge-Yang, Austro-Asiatic, and Formosan languages, and seeks possible conclusions regarding the basic word order types of minority languages in southern China and the word order types of their nominal phrases. Seven parameters are examined and discussed respectively to determine the basic word order types, including the orders of verb and object, verb and adverb of manner, verb and adverb of negation,adjective and adverb of degree, adjective and adverb of negation, adposition, and appositive construction. The word order types of nominal phrases analyzed include the positioning of noun and noun, noun and pronoun, noun and adjective, noun and numeral, noun and classifier, noun and demonstrative, noun and classifier structure, noun and classifier-demonstrative structure, pronoun and classifier structure, classifier and adjective, and noun and relative clause. Through a cross-linguistic comparison, we have identified the major universal tendencies and areal features of the minority languages in question.
