The Austro-Asiatic family spoken in China can be categorized into two distinct groups: theMon-Khmer and the Viet-Muong languages. This chapter aims to provide a comprehensive analysis ofthe basic order patterns and the word orders of nominal phrases within Austro-Asiatic languages inSouthern China. To achieve this, seven parameters are examined to ascertain the basic word order types,including the order between verb and object (V+O or O+V), verb and manner adverb (V+AM orAM+V), verb and adverb of negation (AN+V), adjective and degree adverb (ADJ+AD or AD+ADJ),adjective and negative adverb (AN+ADJ or ADJ+AN), adposition (PREP+NP, AP+VP or VP+AP), andnon-equality comparative construction (ADJ+m+ST or m+ADJ+ST). Seven parameters are scrutinizedto identify the word order of nominal phrases, including the order between noun and noun (N+N(head) or N(head)+N), the noun and the genitive (N+GEN), noun and verb (N+V), noun and adjective (N+A), noun anddemonstrative (N+DEM), noun and classifier structure (N+CLF+NUM+DEM, N+DEM+NUM+CLF,NUM+CLF+N+DEM or N+NUM+CLF+DEM), and noun and relative clause (N+RelV or RelV+N).
