In the late 1980s, the Plant Gene Bank of Yugoslavia (PGBYU) was envisioned as a hub for collecting, conserving, and utilizing plant genetic resources (PGR) not only within the country (former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia) but also in the broader region. After the secession of the former republics, PGBYU evolved into Plant Gene Bank of Serbia (PGBS). Thanks to the decentralized approach to the conservation and utilization of plant genetic resources (PGR) in Serbia, in the case of legumes, this task is performed in several institutes. Except in the Plant Gene Bank of Serbia (PGBS) in Belgrade, legume accessions are collected and conserved in several national institutes: Institute of field and vegetable crops (IFVCNS), Maize research institute Zemun Polje (MRIZP), Institute for vegetable crops Smederevska Palanka (IVCSP), and Institute for forage crops Kruševac (IFCK). Among the eight legume species collected and conserved (Phaseolus vulgaris, Lathyrus sativus, Cicer arietinum, Pisum sativum, Vicia faba, Lens culinaris, Lupinus albus, and Vigna unguiculata), the most numerous are accessions of beans and peas. In the Serbian national collection, IFVCNS participates with 1164 accessions, IVCSP with 205 accessions, and the PGBS facility collection with 104 accessions, with several duplicates among them. Most of the samples are described on the level of passport data; samples that are maintained at the research institutes are characterized in more detail. PGBS has controlled chambers, drying rooms, laboratories, and greenhouses available for researchers and stuff. To ensure the safety and integrity of the genetic resources, the PGBS has to establish backup systems. These will include duplicate seed collections stored at different locations, a backup power supply to protect against power outages, and disaster management plans to address contingencies. Through bilateral cooperation or other project activities, part of the accessions should be stored within the Svalbard Global Seed Vault. With the right support and initiatives, PGBS can become a strong and important element in the conservation of global biodiversity.
