Possibilities of Genomic Research for Trait-Linked Marker Development in Okra

Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus) is a valuable vegetable crop grown worldwide for its high nutritional content and economic importance. Traditional breeding methods for improving traits in okra can be time-consuming and labor-intensive. In recent years, advances in genomic research have opened up new possibilities for trait-linked marker development in okra. This chapter explores the potential of genomic approaches in enhancing breeding efforts, accelerating trait identification, and facilitating the development of improved okra varieties. Most of the uncultivated (wild) species are of secondary gene pool expressing resistance toward major pests and diseases of cultivated species.
