Seed quality assurance is an important component of a vibrant seed production and marketing system. Seed quality assurance in okra comes under the purview of the Indian Seed Act 1966, wherein the quality of the seed must satisfy the field and seed standard requirements of Indian Minimum Seed Certification Standards (IMSCS). Quality in terms of genetic purity and the ability of the seed to establish a proper plant stand in the field is key to a successful seed-producing agency. The primary duty of the seed industry is to achieve quality in production (genetic purity), maintaining quality (physical purity) during processing and handling, and proper testing of the open-pollinated (OP)/hybrid okra seed that ensures proper plant stand in the farmer’s field. Efficient seed certification and seed testing systems ensure quality assurance to the farmers for better productivity in okra. This paper discusses challenges in seed quality assurance in okra, particularly with reference to maintenance of genetic purity of varieties and hybrids, occurrence and development of hard seeds during seed maturation, improvement in planting value of seed through seed enhancement and processing, development of appropriate vigor tests, and detection of seed-borne pathogens.
