Hybrid seed productionin okra has been involving manual emasculation followed by pollination, which are not only labour-intensive but also enhance the cost of hybrid seed production. One of the best ways to economise the production of hybrid seeds is appropriate use male sterile lines. Use of genetic male sterile line (GMS), developed at ICAR-IIHR Bengaluru, can help in large-scale hybrid seed production at a much chepar cost. The commercial F1 hybrid seeds can be produced economically without hand emasculation, which is a human drudgery. Seed production through GMS lines needs rogueing of 50% male fertile in the GMS population used as the female parent. The team at ICAR-IIHR has developed the first commercial okra hybrid in the world, ‘Arka Nikita’, using this GMS system. This F1 hybrid production technology is economically viable, socially acceptable and environmentally feasible. Arka Nikita has got high yield potential of 25 t/ha, with dark green fruits, tolerant to YVMV and is suitable for the fresh market and processing industry. Arka Nikita is notified by CVRC recently for all three seasons in the state of Karnataka, India.
