Toxicity and Health Impacts of Emerging Pollutants

Emerging pollutants (EPs) are a complex problem due to a wide range of environmental pollutants, leading to potential toxicity and health effects. This study investigates the intricate terrain of such pollutants, including pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), surfactants, flame retardants, plasticizers, and novel nanomaterials, which may endanger ecosystems and human welfare. EPs include a range of toxicological impacts, among which PPCPs are particularly noteworthy owing to their extensive use and subsequent release into aquatic environments. Per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), recognized by their persistent nature and ability to accumulate in biological systems, are increasingly being identified as having a significant impact on human health, as supported by growing scientific research. Research findings indicate possible associations between exposure to PFAS and various health concerns, including delays in development, suppression of the immune system, and cancer. The potential of pollutants, such as pesticides and plasticizers, to disrupt the endocrine system substantially threatens human well-being, leading to detrimental effects on reproductive health, developmental abnormalities, and disturbances in hormonal equilibrium, underscoring the need for thorough risk evaluations and regulatory interventions. Nanomaterials, a relatively recent addition to developing contaminants, provide distinct and unprecedented concerns. The long-term health impacts of manufactured nanoparticles cause worry due to their ability to overcome biological barriers and accumulate in tissues. Adopting a comprehensive strategy is essential to effectively tackle the intricate nature of these pollutants, preserve ecosystems, and ensure the well-being of individuals by mitigating the potentially harmful consequences of persistent environmental pollution.
