Design and Implementation of an IoT-Enabled ECG Sensor System for Real-Time Cardiac Monitoring

This paper introduces an ECG sensor system that is IoT-enabled, integrated with the NodeMCU microcontroller for real-time cardiac monitoring. Leveraging the NodeMCU ADC, the system captures and converts ECG data from the non-invasive electrodes into the digital values, which are transmitted to the Thingspeak IoT platform and securely stores in the SQL database for continuous monitoring and analysis. Real-time data retrieval empowers healthcare professionals with up-to-date insights, facilitating timely interventions and personalized treatment plans. The paper emphasizes the significance of NodeMCU, Thingspeak, MATLAB, and Python in achieving real-time monitoring and data analysis. Results that we obtain showcases the ECG waveform, and the integration of IoT technologies enhances analytical potential, facilitated by long-term storage and visualization. Arrhythmia and various cardiovascular diseases can be detected using various algorithms through the analysis of stored waveforms and this is the critical capability of system. The envisioned future scope involves a comprehensive dashboard that displays the detected diseases, providing healthcare professionals with a prior analysis for faster treatments. Moreover, the paper discusses how the ECG sensor system can predict the impending cardiac events by sending timely notifications to patients and caregivers, enabling preparation and necessary precautions. An integrated application provides guidance until medical help arrives, ensuring patient safety during the journey to the hospital which might prolong the survival chances. Simultaneously, doctors receive pre-notifications of patient history and data, expediting the treatment process. In conclusion, this research contributes to reshaping medical monitoring, offering potential revolutions in patient care. The integration of IoT technologies for detecting and analyzing cardiovascular diseases presents an opportunity to improve outcomes, foster collaborations, and create a healthier world.
