Genetically Modified Organisms and Their Impact on Biodiversity
摘要
Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are organisms whose genes have been genetically engineered by manipulating the DNA of the host. These processes do not occur naturally by mating or recombination and are conducted in the lab under specific conditions with sophisticated technology. Genetically modified organisms are altered precisely at a molecular level to introduce desirable characteristics or remove undesirable ones. Nevertheless, with such powerful technology comes a great deal of potential risks and benefits. This book chapter comprehensively analyzes GMOs, their commercialized uses in the medical and agricultural industries, and their advantages and disadvantages from a biodiversity lens.
