Implications of Climate Change on the Himalayan Biodiversity, Ecosystem Services, and Natural Resource Management
摘要
Natural resources at global level, particularly forests, are being adversely affected to a greater extent due to climate change. Climate change has started to affect the different ecosystem services which are locally available but limited in amount. Due to upcoming climate change issue, the forests in the Himalaya are being affected adversely. Livelihood options of majority of populations are primarily dependent on ecosystem services without which well-being of the communities may suffer a lot in the Himalaya. It is assumed that climate change will have an impact on biodiversity of the area and may change the composition, structure, and function of the Himalayan forests. At the same time, this is also assumed that the effect of temperature rise would be greater in the western Himalaya as compared to the eastern Himalaya. Changes in phenology, growth pattern, host–parasite relationships, insect pest incidence, habitat adaptation, biogeochemical interactions, plant–animal–resource connections, hydrological behavior, and other environmental attributes are the examples of how climate change has been affecting a range of species. There has been a greater concern of the challenges of climate change and its implications on the Indian Himalayan forest ecosystem. The present attempt therefore discusses the major problems arising in the existing situation of biodiversity, unmet research needs, and future directions in climate change studies of the area. The knowledge generated regarding the effects of climate change could shed light on the effect on local forest ecosystem. In view of lessening the effects of climate change in near future, there is a need to prioritize adaptation, mitigation-related ecological techniques, and filling up of the policy gaps.
