Uplift Capacity of the Footing Resting on Micropile Reinforced Expansive Clay

Expansive clay soils are highly problematic in nature because of the swelling in volume when come in contact with water and shrink when they dry out. It gives adverse effects on the lightly loaded structures supported by the footing laid on this type of soils. This leads to a significant upward movement of the footing which may cause undesirable cracks in the structure. In this paper a study has been made to investigate the uplift capacity of the footing resting on micro pile reinforced expansive clay using experimental testing. For this purpose, expansive clay bed was prepared in a steel tank and the footing was laid on the small-scale aluminum micro piles reinforced expansive clay. Parametric studies were conducted on the model footing that laid on the micro pile reinforced expansive clay bed under saturated condition. The test result shows that the uplift capacity of the footing is improved significantly in case of the micro pile reinforced expansive clay bed when compared to the footing in unreinforced expansive clay bed. The uplift load capacity of the footing increases with an increase in micro pile diameter which provides more frictional resistance and control over the upward movement of the footing.
