Rainfall Induced Landslide Analysis of Coonoor Region in Nilgiris District Using TRIGRS

Landslides are one of the most serious hydro-geological threats to India's vast areas of land. One of the main reasons behind rainfall induced landslides is change in soil characteristics caused by modification in pore water pressure thereby the resulting disturbances in the stability of naturally formed slopes. Physically based models are widely used in landslide susceptibility analysis. Coonoor region in Nilgiris District of Tamil Nadu is selected for the present study, which is one of the major landslides occurring area. The rainfall induced landslide analysis of the study region is performed using a physically based model, Transient Rainfall Infiltration and Grid based Regional Slope Stability (TRIGRS). Cartosat DEM of the study area is used to develop various thematic maps of the Coonoor region. Rainfall data along with geotechnical and geological data obtained from the literature adopted for the TRIGRS analysis and FoS maps were developed for two types of patterns, linearly increasing and uniform rainfall intensities. Using FoS maps, the landslide prone areas can be determined based on which risk mitigation measures can be adopted. For the assumed soil parameters and rainfall data, few locations of the study region attained instable state indicating landslide event occurrence. The study showed that beyond about 200 mm cumulative rainfall possible occurrence near landslide situations.
