Slope Stability Assessment of Highway Embankment for Different Seismic Zones of India
摘要
The need for better connectivity services to the global community in-line with the developmental strategies of a developing country like India, has necessitated the construction of transportation infrastructure like highways, dams and bridges in seismic vulnerable zones. Due to globalization and urbanization, routes of the infrastructure should be necessarily built in seismic areas to provide connection to different parts of the region. In seismically vulnerable zones, stability against dynamic forces becomes an important factor and should be addressed properly. In every stage of construction of highways, slope stability should be analyzed for both static and seismic forces involved. Design of highways should integrate the possible seismic forces and their subsequent effect before allowing traffic. In the present study, slope stability of a highway embankment is analyzed against static and seismic forces for different Indian seismic zones. Pseudo-static coefficients are computed based on codal provisions to arrive at seismic factor of safety against highway slope stability failure. Stability of the embankment against failure is compared between earthquake zones and the effect of reinforcement to increase safety is determined. Further, embankment is subjected to Newmark deformation analysis to obtain yield acceleration and the corresponding displacement.
