Marine clays found in coastal regions around the world are one of the complex soft clays. The high natural moisture content close to their liquid limit makes them highly compressible with very low shear strength. Proper stabilization of clay is necessary before any mode of construction to prevent any structural problems in the future. The goal of this review article is to enlighten researchers and practising engineers about the different marine clays and to introduce various methods used for stabilization. The geotechnical characteristics of various marine clays are compared. It was found that the properties of marine clays change significantly depending on the initial conditions, especially the liquid and plastic limits. Stabilization using lime, cement, biomass silica, waste materials, etc. is found to be the most efficient method for improving the properties of marine clays.
