Smart Farming: Utilization of Robotics, Drones, Remote Sensing, GIS, AI, and IoT Tools in Agricultural Operations and Water Management

Smart farming has revolutionized agriculture by incorporating modern technology such as robotics, drones, Remote Sensing (RS), Geographic Information System (GIS), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Internet of Things (IoT) tools in agricultural operations and water management. This chapter provides an overview of the application of different state of art technologies of smart farming and their potential to transform agriculture. Robotics in agriculture has enhanced efficiency and productivity by automating processes such as planting, harvesting, and weeding. Drones have become increasingly popular in agriculture due to their ability to capture high-resolution images, detect crop stress, and monitor crop growth. RS and GIS technologies provide useful information about land use land cover, crop condition, soil moisture, water bodies, and other environmental elements, at larger spatial coverage, that influence agriculture. The use of AI and IoT tools in smart farming has enabled farmers to make data-driven decisions, which has resulted in greater agricultural output, reduced waste, and increased efficiency. No doubt these smart technologies all together transform conventional agriculture into smart agriculture, however, deploying some of these technologies encounters difficulties, such as high costs, a lack of technical competencies, limited infrastructure, etc. In conclusion, smart farming has the ability to address some of the most pressing issues confronting agriculture in developing nations, such as water scarcity, climate change, and food security. However, in order to fully realize the benefits of smart farming, investments in research and development, as well as the creation of regulations and infrastructure to enable the adoption of these technologies, are required.
