Potential of Renewable Energy for Sustainable Agricultural Production in North East India

Renewable energy solutions provide a substantial opportunity to raise farmer incomes, decrease losses, create employment, provide access to clean cooking fuels, and hasten climate action for mitigation and adaptation strategies. Agriculture is the only means through which people can effectively produce their own food. The majority of farm equipment is powered by fossil fuels, which increase greenhouse gas emissions and hasten climate change. The development of renewable resources like solar, wind, biomass, tidal, geo-thermal, small-scale hydro, biofuels, and wave-generated power can reduce such environmental harm. The agricultural sector has a lot of promise with these renewable resources. The idea of sustainable agriculture revolves around striking a delicate balance between increasing crop output and preserving economic stability, while avoiding the use of limited natural resources and unfavorable environmental effects. Sustainable agriculture is related to agricultural production systems without harming the environment or future generations. Renewable energy is widely available in North East India and can successfully meet the region’s demand for electricity. The production of energy from fossil fuels is expensive, produces greenhouse gas (GHS) emissions, and accelerates the process of climate change. It is necessary to switch from existing fossil fuel-based energy generation to renewable-based energy generation in order to slow down climate change and minimize GHG emissions. The fundamental goals of the agricultural production process are food security and sustainable agriculture, and these goals can only be met by switching from farming methods that rely on fossil fuels to those that do so using renewable energy sources. Consequently, this article explores the significance and potential of renewable energy for long-term agricultural production sustainability in North East Region (NER) of India.
