Cereal crops play a pivotal role in global food security, providing a significant portion of the world’s dietary calories. However, the increasing frequency and intensity of environmental stresses, such as drought, salinity, and temperature extremes, pose substantial threats to cereal production. In response to these challenges, a growing body of research is focusing on developing eco-friendly approaches to enhance stress resilience in cereals. This review provides an overview of the current status and future prospects of eco-friendly strategies aimed at improving stress resilience in cereal crops. These approaches encompass both traditional and innovative strategies, ranging from agroecological practices and biofertilizers to genetic engineering and precision agriculture. The chapter explores the role of organic farming practices, such as cover cropping and crop rotation, in promoting soil health and enhancing the adaptive capacity of cereals to environmental stressors. Additionally, the potential of microbial inoculants and biofertilizers in fostering plant–microbe interactions that confer stress tolerance is discussed. The genetic aspects of stress resilience are addressed, highlighting the progress in breeding programs and genetic engineering to develop stress-tolerant cereal varieties. This chapter provides a comprehensive synthesis of the current knowledge on eco-friendly approaches for enhancing stress resilience in cereals. It outlines the multifaceted strategies that hold promise in mitigating the adverse effects of environmental stresses on cereal crops, while also discussing the challenges and future directions for research in this critical field.
