Eggshell Waste Utilization as a Sustainable Building Material: A Comprehensive Review

One of the main benefits of using eggshell powder as a sustainable construction material is that it can reduce the need for more traditional, non-renewable materials such as cement. Cement production is a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions which contribute approximately 8% of global \({\text{CO}}_{2}\) emissions and consumes a large amount of energy. Eggshell waste may be transformed into a cement substitute that can be used instead of cement, which can help mitigate environmental impact and provide the building sector access to a valuable resource. Eggshell powder is primarily composed of calcium carbonate ( \({\text{CaCO}}_{3}\) ), which accounts for approximately 95% of its dry weight. This mineral is the same substance found in limestone and is a widely used industrial mineral due to its excellent binding properties. The findings show that cementitious material’s properties have improved. Mainly, strength growth is equivalent to the control when eggshell powder replaces 10–15% of the cement. The most recent research on using eggshell powder in building materials, including a soil stabilizer, concrete and fibre-reinforced concrete, is presented in this study. Analysis was also done on the eggshell powder’s physical and chemical qualities and the variables that affect its properties.
