Non-ablative resurfacing, also referred to as subsurface or dermal remodeling, is a recently introduced technology for restoring damaged collagen without injuring or removing the overlying epidermis. The results of non-ablative laser resurfacing are not as effective as ablative laser resurfacing but the excellent safety profile and rapid recovery post-treatment have made these systems popular. This type of laser resurfacing is further subdivided into mid-infrared lasers that target the dermis and are used for non-ablative resurfacing; visible lasers such as the pulsed dye laser (PDL) and the pulsed 532-nm potassium titanyl phosphate (KTP) laser, alone or in conjunction with the 1064-nm neodymium-yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Nd:YAG) laser; and intense pulsed light (IPL) sources [1, 2].
