The global COVID-19 pandemic affected the economies of all countries but particularly import-dependent ones such as Ghana. A notable feature of the pandemic was the closure of borders and movement restrictions within and between countries. The pandemic restrictions posed various challenges to transnational traders in Ghana whose livelihoods depend on their regular movements to popular destinations in East Asia and the Middle East. Drawing from both quantitative and qualitative data gathered through a survey of transnational traders as well as in-depth interviews in the city of Accra, this chapter explores the experiences of traders and assesses the effect of the pandemic on their businesses, the strategies they used and significant gendered differences. The chapter shows that the COVID-19 pandemic has had both positive and negative effects on the traders with significant gendered dimensions.
