Due to the limitation of traditional images in expressing 3D space, point clouds have been applied in many practical industrial production fields, including autonomous driving, reverse engineering, digital twin city, topography mapping, robotics, medical analysis, digital museums, etc. The introduction of point clouds in these fields not only improves production efficiency but also saves a lot of production costs. In autonomous driving, point clouds enable real-time environmental perception and precise mapping, improving vehicle navigation and decision-making. Reverse engineering uses point clouds for accurate object modelling and simplification. Robotics benefits from enhanced scene recognition and task execution. Additionally, point clouds are also widely used in the digital twin city, topography mapping, and digital museum fields, where point clouds facilitate high-resolution terrain mapping, urban infrastructure monitoring, and detailed medical modelling. In this chapter, we discuss in detail the engineering applications of 3D point clouds.

摘要
