Importance of Urban Forests in Maintaining the Ecological-Economic Linkages of Environment: A Case Study on Purulia Town, West Bengal, India
摘要
The term “urban forests” refers to any trees, forests, or related plants that are found in or very close to towns, cities, or other areas where people live, work, or play. The fact that urban forests are found in densely populated places such as cities, suburbs, and other human settlements sets them apart from woods found outside of metropolitan areas. The phrase “urban forestry” refers to the management of tree populations in cities of all sizes, and there is no minimum number of residents required for a community to qualify as having an urban forest. This paper discusses the definitions of urban forestry in Purulia, West Bengal. This paper also describes the ecological services, namely, carbon sequestration, pollution removal, and hydrological functions, provided by the urban forest green space in the Purulia district. The economic value of the services offered by the urban forests of Purulia town was calculated, and the results show that the urban forestry sector of Purulia saves much of the expenditure of Purulia municipality to purify the air, thereby maintaining the air quality of Purulia town.
