The central nervous system (CNS) has developed physiological barriers to selectively restrict the exchange of ions and solutes between the blood and brain, allowing a tight regulation of the CNS milieu for proper neuronal function. In order to enter the brain microenvironment, manganese from the systemic circulation has to cross either of the two strictly controlled blood–brain interfaces: the blood–brain barrier and the blood–cerebrospinal fluid barrier (BCB). This chapter explores the latest progress concerning manganese transport via the BCB.
