The chapters that came before this one cover the origins of Chinese agriculture from about four different angles. The first section provides a theoretical explanation based on the notion of cultural ecology, for why agriculture started and why it did not in some areas. The archaeological evidence is not directly relevant to this explanation. The origin of agriculture has traditionally been viewed by archaeologists theoretically.
