Workshops and seminars are formal learning activities of short duration that can contribute significantly to faculty development programs. While seminars tend to emphasize knowledge acquisition by participants, workshops generally offer participants opportunities to consider how knowledge might be applied in practice. Short courses may aim to achieve both objectives. In this chapter, the authors provide practical guidance based on available evidence about how to design workshops, seminars, and short courses so that faculty developers can select the format that will best meet the outcomes they seek to address in in-person, online, and hybrid (blended) learning contexts. The authors also suggest future directions for exploration and development including the role of technology and how faculty developers build their expertise as facilitators.
