摘要
The Neo-VaishnavaVaishnava \i movementIdentities \i in medieval AssamAssam \i emergedSpirituality \i as a protest against the prevailing BrahmanicalBrahmanical hegemony. The founding members of the movement, Sankardeva and MadhavdevaMadhavdeva were highly critical of Brahmanical supremacy. They disapproved the prevailing social and cultural evils and actively advocated for change. The basic ideology of the movement during a tumultuous period was to create an ideal society, by demolishing the binaries which worked in favour of dividing the society. In order to achieve their goal, the propagators of Neo-Vaishnavism gave more emphasis on simplistic form of ritualistic practices discarding all the extravagance prescribed by other sects of Hinduism. The role of the state and its relationship with the faith was controversial at times but gradually the state adopted amiable policies, and in later period even extended patronage. The SatraSatra \i and NaamgharNaamghar \i, two of the main institutionsInstitutions \i of Vaishnavism played a decisive role in assimilation and proliferation of the faith among the varied groups of people. In this chapter, I have tried to explore the relevance and contribution of the movement which was detrimental for many important changes in the society. Further, Vaishnavism was able to create a space for the vulnerable and marginalized to strengthen their voices against the odds of those times which has been extensively discussed in the chapter. Moreover, the role of the two decentralized institutions and their contributions in creating a base for the propagation of the faith is discussed in details. Also, the focus is given on the historical developments between State and its relationship with Neo-Vaishnavism.
