Exposure Therapy in the Treatment of Phobias Using Virtual Reality
摘要
In today’s world, many people suffer from different phobias such as fear of flying, heights, spiders, public speaking, etc. The various phobias showcase the wide array of fears individuals may experience such as aerophobia, acrophobia, glossophobia, etc. Exposure therapy is a psychological technique that involves gradually and safely facing feared situations, objects, or thoughts to reduce anxiety and overcome phobias through repeated exposure and habituation. While exposure therapy has proven efficacy, limitations exist, including patient resistance, incomplete generalization, and ethical considerations. Virtual reality uses immersive simulations to confront and treat real-world fears, aiding exposure therapy in a controlled, safe environment to reduce phobia-related anxiety. Virtual Reality Exposure Therapy gives better efficacy in addressing phobias by systematically and gradually exposing individuals to their most intense fears. State-of-the-art computer graphics techniques such as Realistic Lighting Models, Spatial data structures, Ray tracing, and optimization techniques are identified to create more visually realistic virtual environments that accurately simulate phobic scenarios.
