Sketching with Paper Models: A Case Study Exploring Paper Folding as a Tool to Assist Sketching During Form Exploration in Car Design Styling

In car design, styling plays a major role in the success of the product. The styling activity focuses on developing a unique styling DNA based on the surface behavior, graphic details, and proportions/stance of a vehicle. In the styling process, the quantity and variety of form generated play a major role in arriving at a creative final solution. Based on the literature study and semi-structured interviews among design professionals, it has been observed that designers use sketching with the help of visual boards as a central tool to explore forms in the design ideation phase. This exact process has been followed in academic institutions as well. However, design students often struggle to develop unique forms in considerable quantity during design ideation process with this approach. This paper reports an analysis of the student form exploration process in design ideation stage with the intention to devise a new method in car design styling. As a part of the study, a group of mobility and vehicle design students were asked to create a vision form for a new vehicle concept using two different methods. In the first method, students followed the traditional process of sketching. In the second approach, low fidelity prototyping using paper folding was used to support ideation process alongside sketching. This paper examines the influence of the second method on the idea fluency and variety of the design solutions. Results indicated that sketching with free form low fidelity paper models helped students to come up with more ideas compared to the other method. Though the understanding of the process varied among students, in most of the cases, it had a positive impact on the quantity and variety of ideas generated.
