Design as a Career: A Contextual Analysis of Design Career Dynamics in North-East India
摘要
In our societal system, parents often play a significant role in shaping their child’s career choices, sometimes favouring conventional paths over alternative careers like fashion design or creative arts and crafts, etc. They often influence their decisions based on concerns about job stability or societal expectations. Design education in India faces unique challenges, particularly in the north-east region, due to limited colleges offering design as a field of study and societal preferences for traditional careers, thereby hindering its growth. With limited access to government-run design institutions, students in this region often find themselves with limited career options to choose from after graduating high school. Moreover, parents in this region are more inclined towards traditional and conventional career paths, and government jobs hold a societal preference due to their capacity to offer financial security, whereas design graduates predominantly find employment in the private sector. However, the scope of having a career in creative arts and design is improving in a significant way. The influence of society while choosing a career path is very prominent. In this study, we explore how society influences people in choosing a career. Choosing design as a career path is rapidly gaining momentum in India, with a growing number of individuals embracing it as an enticing option. Design careers are perceived as financially risky ( https://medium.com/@BethanyHeck/what-i-ve-learned-about-design-jobs-settling-7b99d83b05ab ); but their future scope promises innovation and creative opportunities. This case study aims to explore and analyse design as a career path in a data-driven approach.
