Grammar-Based Brainstorming Framework to Arrive at a Problem Statement Leading to a Comprehensive Product Design Brief

A design project in any setup starts with a comprehensive yet precise project brief. This brief consists of a specific “problem statement” accompanied by other objectives for the project portraying context and constraints of feasibility or viability. The problem statement itself typically consists of a combination of “words” defining the user, purpose, and/or the context as per the specific requirements. In a classroom setup, students often spend an extensive amount of time to arrive at a statement, disrupting the following stages resulting into a rushed output to match the academic deadlines. The purpose of this experiment, of using “Grammar-Based Brainstorming Framework” conducted in a classroom setup, was to economize the process of defining a problem statement leading to a project brief for designing products. Kanetkar (Influence of lexical semantics on product form. In: Chakrabarti A (ed) Research into design for a connected world, Smart innovation, systems and technologies, vol 135. Springer, Singapore, 2019) argued that using grammatical roles of words can result in identifying the schema of a product and that the noun leads to obvious physicality whereas a verb defines the purpose of the product. This exercise was based on the ability of an action verb to define purpose while allowing creative visualization to define the physicality. The steps involved studying the verb and mapping it against other aspects of the brief. This “Grammar-Based Brainstorming Framework” was expected to provide the students with an opportunity to diversify and then designate vocabulary leading to appropriate combinations of words to define project briefs. The rest of the design process was to be followed as usual, consisting of design research to start with.
