Water is important natural resource for the existence of life on the earth. The distribution of clean and sufficient water to each consumer is the major concern of the water supply authority. Nowadays fulfilling the needs of supplying safe drinking water through pipe for the entire population of a large country has become a challenging task for the authorities. The state water authorities in India is striving hard to supply piped water to each household by the year 2024. The main challenge of rural water supply is the distributed cluster of service area extending difficult terrain and remote source locations. To ensure the water supply with limited ground elevation data, advance technologies are required for planning and design of regional rural water supply schemes. Astol water supply project of south Gujarat is one of the largest rural water supply scheme consists of a pumping main, primary network and secondary network to distribute the water to each household. In this study, JalTantra, an integer linear programming tool, has been successfully used to design primary network of the Astol water supply project. The main objective of the study is to design the water distribution system (WDS) economically and to ensure water supply of the desired quantity and pressure to the community in a typical hilly terrain. JalTantra tool has been used to develop the topology of pipeline system and for obtaining a cost estimate while designing the optimum size of pipes. The solution obtained reveals that it fulfills demands with the most economical dimeter and with a choice of pumps by satisfying the constraints of residual pressure. The available head is utilized for a long pipeline with moving node and multiple segments.
