This study examines the land struggles of the Southern Peasants’ Federation of Thailand (SPFT) in Surat Thani province, Thailand, highlighting the counterpoint with the country’s centralized land management system, which has led to unequal land distribution and subsequent conflicts. The author introduces the concept of community rights as a viable alternative to strengthen the land rights movement in Thailand, particularly for the SPFT. The narrative includes the history of the SPFT’s activism and also details the SPFT’s alternative strategies to challenge the centralized system and resist capitalist pressures. These strategies encompass innovative land governance and management practices, community economic initiatives, grassroots democracy, networking efforts, the establishment of community constitutions, the promotion of local cultures, and women empowerment. By recognizing land as a fundamental right for peasants, the SPFT successfully utilizes it as a means of production for sustainable livelihoods, thereby reinforcing it as a safety net and social capital for local communities.
