Muslim society is deeply divided on the question of polygamy. There are many proponents, stakeholders, and critics in the polygamy debate. In Malaysia, the religious authorities or establishment still support the practice of polygamy for Muslims, even though it was made illegal by the Law Reform (Marriage and Divorce) Act 1976 for non-Muslims (i.e. people of other faiths).
