Development of Inherent Flame-Retardant Textiles for Protection Against Molten Metal

In foundries and similar industries where workers handle molten metals, burns and injuries are frequently encountered. The spectrum of thermal hazards in these industries includes molten metal splash, fire, high-temperature flame, steam burn, radiant heat exposure and many more. Primary protective clothing is the first line of defence against these foundry hazards. For protection against thermal hazards, many commercial fabrics with varying performances and properties are used, which include fire-resistant (FR) cotton, 100% para-aramid, Savesplash®, meta-aramid, aluminized aramid, Nomex, FR viscose–wool–polyaramid, leather, etc. The present study analyses the performance of available fabrics, viz. neoprene-coated 100% para-aramid, neoprene-coated Savesplash®, neoprene-coated FR cotton, neoprene-coated 46 Tex core yarn para-aramid/50 micron ss wire, para-aramid/ss wire/modacrylic, 50/50 para-aramid-modacrylic nonwoven and leather against molten aluminium. The performance of protective clothing against large splashes of molten aluminium was assessed using ISO 9185:1990. The testing was set per the required standards, and experiments were conducted accordingly. It was observed that pasting aluminium foil on the fabric side enhanced the splash protection performance of the fabrics, while pasting aluminium foil on the coating side diminished the performance of the respective fabric. Additionally, it was observed that the coated side of the fabric showed excellent splash protection in comparison to the uncoated side.
