The name Chenopodium album L. is derived from the Greek word Cheno, meaning goose, and the Latin word podium, meaning foot referring to the leaves, and the species album meaning white refers to the white-gray grainy particles on the undersides of the leaves. It is considered a popular wild vegetable in Southern Africa and grown as a traditional leafy vegetable in many parts of India. C. album plant is extensively consumed in Northern India as a leafy vegetable “bathua sag” and as animal feed too in many Asian countries. Usually, the leaves and tender stem are cooked in form of sag (leafy vegetable) and mixed with dal/puri/paratha and with curd as raita. Being quick-growing in habit, it can be fitted well in multiple cropping systems. It is an excellent source of health-promoting phytochemical, fiber, vitamins, and minerals like iron. Nowadays several species of Chenopodium are in high demand due to its seed being source of gluten-free protein. So far it has not attained the status of commercial cultivation and still considered as weed. Chenopods is available in winter season when it grows as weed in various crops, like wheat, mustards, etc. It is collected from the field and sold in the market. Though some commercial varieties of chenopod have been developed and notified by public sector organization in India, but so far, its cultivation has not taken a commercial status. The commercialization of vegetable growing has put major challenges to chenopod cultivation. There is an urgent need to explore all the genetic resources available in various parts of the world and evaluate them in tropical and subtropical climatic condition. The advance breeding tools and techniques along with available genomic information need to be exploited for faster and precise trait-specific improvement of chenopods.
