Allard (Principles of plant breeding. Wiley, New York, 1960) defines germplasm as “the total of heredity materials in species.” The term germplasm is now referred to as plant genetic resources. Plant genetic resources (PGRs) play a fundamental role as essential raw materials for any crop improvement initiatives. These resources, whether in the form of seeds or vegetative propagules, house the functional hereditary units crucial for plant development. Often termed as germplasm or genetic resource material, Sir Otto Frankel is credited with coining the term “genetic resources” (Given 1987). The expanding number of germplasm collections has given rise to challenges regarding the accessibility and efficient utilization in plant breeding and research endeavors. Researchers have introduced the concept of “core collections” (CCs) to address these challenges. While not intended to supplant existing collections, these collections serve as a judiciously selected subset designed to represent the genetic diversity inherent in larger collections (Frankel, Genetic perspectives of germplasm conservation.
