Length–Weight Relationship and Condition Factor of Native Fish Population in Kenyir Lake Basin: Environmental Health Impacts and Mitigations Strategies

Introduction: The vegetation and wildlife that live around water bodies are included in freshwater ecosystems. Each of them is part of a larger biological and hydrological landscape that also includes upland terrestrial ecosystems, riparian zones, and subsurface groundwater aquifers. Objective: The aim of this study is to identify the Length–Weight Relationship (LWR) and condition factor of three native species from the Kenyir Lake Basin, as well as the environmental impacts and mitigation strategies. Methodology: LWR and condition factor of Channa micropeltes (Toman), Hampala macrolepidata (Sebarau) and Chitala lopis (Belida) were conducted at two main rivers (Terengganu River and Petuang River) during wet season, normal season and dry season. Result and Discussion: Among these three native species generally showed the equilibrium allometric growth recorded values of 3.87 ± 2.201 and condition factor (K) as 6.25 ± 0.97 during wet, normal, and dry seasons at Terengganu River and Petuang River. Overall, the growth level of these three native species showed the ideal growth at the Terengganu River compared to the Petuang River. Conclusion: Management and monitoring programs will need to be initiated, or modifications to an existing program will need to be made so that the ecological effects of implementing the flow recommendations can be evaluated adequately.
